4 Things I Love Most about Working from Home

As Covid-19 rattled the world in 2020, many people were abruptly forced to work from home. With this came obstacles such as colleagues not knowing how to use necessary technology, children running through the background of Zoom calls, and many more distractions being added into the workplace.

However, once these kinks were ironed out, many people had and have no desire to return to the workplace. I am one of them. Work-from-home has provided me with much more time, flexibility, and enjoyment. That being said, here are the 4 things I love most about working from home.

First, I save a lot of time by not commuting five days a week to an in-person job. Because of this, I don’t have to wake up super early to eat, get presentable, then drive to work.

I can take a break whenever I want in the day to eat. As with many remote jobs, I rarely have a meeting with my webcam on, so my work attire is usually a hoodie or t-shirt. And I treasure the extra sleep I get from not driving 15, 30, or even 60 minutes to and from work.

Second, I can save money by eating food at home instead of eating out. If I were to eat out five days a week for 50 weeks at $10 a lunch (which would be just cheap fast food), that would cost me $2,500 over the course of the year.

Additionally, a good, hot meal at home is way better to me than a stale sandwich threw together at 7am. It’s nice to be able to throw something on the stove or in the oven while I am working then take the time to enjoy my food.

Third, it’s nice to get to work from anywhere and listen to anything while I work which you can’t do with many office jobs. While my job (data analyst) is typically thought of as a desk job, I do much of my work from my couch or outside on a nice day. I’m also able to listen to music and podcasts out loud while I work which makes my job a lot more enjoyable.

Last but not least, working from home gives me the freedom to change my geography. Since I started working from home in 2021, I have lived in 3 different towns in Kentucky as well as Orlando, Florida. My wife got accepted to the Disney College Program, so I got to move down there with her and become a Disney passholder.

Those after work trips to ride rollercoasters and buy overpriced snacks would have been impossible with an in-person job in Kentucky. I’ve moved three times since working remotely, and had I been a slave to a building, it just couldn’t have happened.

Those are the main reasons I love working from home. There are definitely downsides as well that must be overcome, but all in all, the time and flexibility I’m given make it all worthwhile.

  1. […] There are many tremendous pros to working at home. You’re not tied down to one location, you don’t have to commute, you can make lunch at home, and you can listen to podcasts and music out loud while you work. For more on these perks, check out my last blog post HERE. […]
